COLLECTIVE CRAFT EXHIBITION
For CHIANG MAI DESIGN WEEK 2017,
TCDC CHIANG MAI
Why do we still make certain things by hand ? Why are certain crafts still practiced in traditional ways ?What are the values of objects made quickly by machine and objects made slowly by hand ? In what ways can traditional crafts be part of everyday life ?
These questions might have been pondered by many of us. This Collective Craft exhibition aims to explore them through objects chosen by 29 people from different walks of life, including artist, designer, architect, maker, writer, entrepreneur, and historian. Each "selector" has chosen a personal item to showcase, which is either a tool, a household item, or an object with sentimental value. These daily-life objects are identifiers of our identities. They are the recorders of our ways of life which are transformed by time.
This exhibition mainly explores handmade objects made in country. Though they look like ordinary objects, they were handmade with an aim to answer to certain needs in life, even in the age of technology. The exhibition also aims to observe certain unique characteristics of handmade objects in the modern context
Through people, modern ways of living, and everyday crafts.
